A word of counsel to the Graduating class of 2025 on Career Preparation
As you approach the final stretch before your graduation in November 2025, the Office of Career Services warmly congratulates you on this remarkable achievement. Completing your studies is a significant milestone, one that reflects your dedication, resilience, and hard work. Not all students reach this point, and we encourage you to take a moment to celebrate how far you’ve come.
While you await graduation, this period presents a valuable opportunity to prepare for your next step. Whether you are aiming to enter the workforce, pursue further studies, or explore new interests, here are some practical ways to make this time count:
1. Polish Your Resume and LinkedIn
Update your resume and online professional profile with your latest academic achievements and experiences. Tailor them to the types of roles or fields you’re interested in.
2. Engage in Volunteer Work or Short-term Internships
Seek out volunteer roles or short-term internships to gain relevant experience, grow your network, and strengthen your CV.
3. Take Professional Courses
Enroll in free or affordable online courses in your area of study. Platforms like Coursera, LinkedIn Learning, or edX offer industry-relevant skills that boost your employability.
4. Build Soft Skills
Work on essential soft skills such as communication, time management, adaptability, and teamwork. These are often what set strong candidates apart in interviews and in the workplace.
5. Network Actively
Connect with lecturers, alumni, and professionals in your field. Attend career events or reach out via LinkedIn for informational chats. You never know where a connection might lead.
6. Research Job and Study Opportunities
Start exploring the job market or postgraduate programs early. Understanding industry trends and employer expectations now will help you prepare and act confidently when opportunities arise.
7. Practice Interview and Communication Skills
Use this time to refine how you present yourself verbally and in writing. Practice mock interviews and learn how to craft effective cover letters and professional emails.
8. Prepare Academically and Administratively
Confirm that all your marks are entered, fees are cleared, and any supplementary exams are resolved. Taking care of these tasks early ensures a smooth path to graduation.
9. Invest in Hobbies and Personal Development
Explore your interests, pick up a new skill, or develop a talent you have neglected. Personal growth outside academics can be both fulfilling and professionally enriching.
This is your moment to prepare with purpose. By taking small, strategic steps now, you will set yourself up for a smoother and more successful transition after graduation. Celebrate how far you have come and take bold steps toward where you are going.
